1. Scrubbing a stain
Scrubbing frays the fibers and pushes the spill deeper and wider. Blot instead: press a clean white cloth straight down, lift, and repeat from the outside of the stain inward.
2. Using too much cleaning product
More soap does not mean cleaner carpet. Excess detergent that is not rinsed out stays sticky and attracts dirt, so the carpet re-soils fast. Use the least product that works, and rinse thoroughly.
3. Over-wetting the carpet
Soaking the carpet invites musty odor, browning and returning stains as the moisture wicks back up. Keep moisture controlled and make sure the carpet can dry quickly.
4. Letting spills sit
The longer a spill sits, the deeper it sets. Act within minutes: blot up as much as possible before it reaches the backing.
5. Using the wrong products
Bleach and harsh household cleaners can strip color or damage certain fibers. Match the product to your carpet type, and skip anything you are unsure about.
6. Skipping the hidden-spot test
Always test a cleaner on an out-of-the-way patch first. Two minutes of testing can save you from a bleached or discolored spot in the middle of the room.
